The Care Assistant role
The role of a Care Assistant is demanding but also rewarding and is likely to involve you working with people who have difficulties in performing their daily activities. You may be working with older people, children, families or people with physical or learning disabilities. Very often the job will involve working with people in nursing homes, day centres, sheltered housing or in the individuals home. Typical responsibilities of the role include:
- helping clients with washing, dressing, eating and using toilet facilities
- liaising with and supporting families with caring responsibilities
- supporting clients with tasks such as laundry, housework and shopping
- helping to organise leisure activities and accompanying clients when in public situations
- helping clients with managing their budget and paying bills
- working on individual care and development plans with other health and social care professionals
As a Care Assistant your working hours may vary and could include working evenings, weekends or doing split shifts. If you are working in the community then you may need to travel between the homes of your clients or if you are working in a nursing/residential home you may have to stay overnight on a rota basis.
